Sabyasachi Mukherjee x H&M
is the designer collaboration to look out for this year’s spring 2020.
Since H&M released its first designer collaboration with Karl Lagerfeld in 2004, it has put out a series of projects with top designers like Giambattista Valli, Johanna Ortiz, Jimmy Choo, Stella McCartney, Balmain and Versace, among others took mostly from the runways of Europe’s fashion weeks. Its latest partnership, however, is taking a slightly different track and one that signals H&M’s ambitions in India, one of its fastest-growing markets.
For the first time ever, H&M is collaborating with an Indian designer. His garments have been seen on Bollywood superstars as well as billionaire heiresses — and this spring they can be seen on you, this year your dream of owning a piece by Sabyasachi might not be too far now.
Yes H&M is collaborating with none other than Sabyasachi Mukherjee.
The Sabyasachi x H&M collab is going to be historic, since it marks the first time an Indian designer will be lending his name to a project of this scale.
Sabyasachi, hailing from Kolkata, launched his eponymous label in the summer of 1999. Sabyasachi Mukherjee recently celebrated his 20-year milestone, he has grown the company to encompass couture, ready-to-wear, fine jewellery and accessories. The designer has five flagship stores across India and has also founded Sabyasachi Art Foundation, a tribute to his artist mother. He also dressed a few hundred brides, and collaborated with Pottery Barn on a home line.
Taking cues from India’s rich textile history, the Sabyasachi x H&M collection mixes modern and traditional silhouettes with a nod towards athleisure and glamping. A key highlight of this collection will be Indian textile and print traditions brought to life by the Sabyasachi Art Foundation, meticulously crafted embroidery and multicultural silhouettes.
"I am happy to announce the collaboration with H&M as it allows us the opportunity to share the Sabyasachi aesthetic to a wider audience in India and worldwide. Having done couture for the majority of my career, it is very exciting to bring that finesse and craft to ‘ready-to-wear’ and to create whimsical and
fluid silhouettes that bring relaxed sophistication to everyday life,” said the designer.
Ella Soccorsi, Concept Designer at Collaborations & Special collections, H&M adds, "We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with iconic designer Sabyasachi, known for his dynamic use of indigenous crafts and textiles — a language so stunning that it permanently altered the fashion and design landscape of the country,” .
Sabyasachi Mukherjee is famous for his vibrant and eclectic styles and the handcrafted beauty behind them.
The Sabyasachi x H&M collaboration, called 'Wanderlust', will present hand-crafted, eclectic travel pieces that will resonate with the modern global nomad wanting to add that extra to their wardrobe.
Mukherjee reveals that this new collection—a mix of modern and traditional silhouettes—has been inspired by Morocco, Istanbul, Seville as well as Jodhpur, and his hometown of Kolkata.
The collection will hit flagship stores and will be available globally on hm.com in 48 markets on April 16 as well as be available on Myntra in India.
