The month of June is celebrated as the Global Pride Month which is being celebrated by the LGBT community month in various ways. Around the globe, various events are held during this special month as a way of recognizing the influence LGBT people have had around the world.
Why was June chosen?
Because it is when the Stonewall Riots happened , way back in 1969.
Pride month is time to peacefully protest and raise political awareness of current issues facing the community. Parades are a prominent feature of Pride month, and there are many street parties, community events, poetry readings, speech making, street festivals and academic sessions all of which are covered by mainstream media and attracting many participants.
Since the world is concerned due to the pandemic, a lot virtual talks, webinars and challenges are running over the social media. One such challenge called the #21DaysAllyChallenge, has been initiated by Pride Circle as a “global programme to require conscious steps to recognize and neutralize biases and stereotypes about the LGBT+ community and enable social change”. Began on June 1, its a series of 21 mini-challenges covering a period of 21 days. . As per Pride Circle’s statement, “this is based on science that it takes 21 days to form a new habit”. Pride Month is so important because it marks the start of huge change within the LGBT+ community, as well as the wider societal implications. Although attitudes and injustice still remain, we have come a long way since the riots of 1969 and by continuing in this long standing tradition we continue to raise awareness, improve the attitudes of society and encourage inclusiveness.
